Job Title: Machine Shop Supervisor 110k-135k DOE
Status: Exempt
Reports To: Production Manager
General Overview
The Machine Shop Supervisor is a skilled technical leader responsible for managing all aspects of a small machine shop while actively performing advanced machining tasks. This role requires expert CNC programming, the ability to operate all shop equipment, and lead shop operations. The supervisor will design and create complex tooling, ensure efficient workflow, maintain quality standards, and collaborate with vendors to source tooling and equipment. This position combines leadership with hands-on technical execution.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
- Oversee daily operations of the machine shop, including scheduling and prioritizing work.
- Train, mentor, and guide machinists on machining techniques, safety, and quality standards.
- Maintain shop organization and enforce compliance with 5S and Lean principles.
- Serve as the primary CNC programmer using Mastercam (or equivalent software).
- Set up and operate CNC and manual machines to produce precision parts and tooling.
- Read and interpret complex engineering drawings and GD&T specifications.
- Perform advanced machining tasks, including tight-tolerance work and multi-axis operations.
- Design, fabricate, and repair precision dies, molds, jigs, and fixtures for complex production needs.
- Develop innovative tooling solutions to support new product development and manufacturing processes.
- Perform maintenance, repairs, and adjustments on existing tools to ensure consistent performance.
- Research and evaluate new tooling, equipment, and technologies to improve shop efficiency.
- Collaborate with vendors and procurement to source, purchase, and maintain tooling and equipment.
- Inspect finished products and tooling for conformance to specifications.
- Implement process improvements to reduce waste and increase productivity.
- Enforce safety standards and maintain a clean, organized work environment.
- Ensure compliance with all applicable regulations and company policies.
- Collaborate with engineers and production teams to discuss design changes and improvements.
- Communicate proactively to ensure project success and customer satisfaction.

Qualifications/Requirements
- Minimum 10 years of machine shop experience, including CNC and manual machining.
- Minimum of 1–2 years in a lead or supervisory role.
- Proven experience in complex tooling design and tool & die making.
- Expert-level CNC programming skills (Mastercam preferred).
- Ability to operate all shop equipment and perform complex machining tasks.
- Strong understanding of engineering drawings and GD&T.
- Experience with vendor sourcing and equipment procurement.
- Knowledge of Lean Manufacturing and 5S principles.
- Must meet eligibility requirements for export control compliance (U.S. Person).
Education
Vocational/Technical Certification or equivalent; additional technical certifications or associate/bachelor’s degree in machining or manufacturing preferred.
Additional Skills
- Basic math and reasoning skills.
- Ability to read and write simple correspondence.
- Computer proficiency for data entry and time tracking.
